The seven girls who qualified for the state meet competed this past Saturday in the Division I State Finals at Hudsonville High School. It was good for our girls to be a part of the greatest collection of Track & Field talent/athletes from across the state of Michigan. Hopefully this was the beginning of multiple trips for several of these girls and more to come in the future. It is a place West Ottawa athletes belong. Official results can be found here.
Morgan Miller did set another PR in the 300- hurdles; moving up 3 spots from where she was seeded going into the meet. While most of the performances did not go as well as we all would have hoped, that should not tarnish the season for the girls who were disappointed. This was one of the most successful seasons the track team has had since the 1990s. We have a number of things to build off moving forward: our team is young and the future is bright if we continue to stay focused, work hard in the off season, and consistently show up to compete for the team whether it is the state meet or a dual meet.
Speaking of working hard in the off season:
First and foremost, I encourage all of the girls to stay consistently active throughout the year, whether that is training for other sports, travel teams, gymnastics, or general conditioning among many of the other things people do to stay active. The earlier one develops an active lifestyle, the easier it is to maintain that throughout your life.
At the bare minimum- if one is not competing in another sport, the girls should be attending the FREE weight training/conditioning offered year round. Summer hours: Mon, Wed, Thurs from 10:30-11:30am at the North High School weight room.
Of course, anyone who is planning on doing cross country should connect with Coach Hart about summer conditioning at Tunnel Park- Mon through Fri 8am-9 or so at Tunnel Park. Anyone of you would be welcome to come and run if you want to get some running in to stay in shape.
If anyone is interested in trying out pole vault, Coach Drnek is planning to have open vault once per week- Wednesday nights 6:30pm- 8 or so @ Zeeland HS stadium. Contact him for more details.
CAMPS
Attending camps during the summer is another great opportunity to get coaching from other coaches from throughout the state.
GVSU has a Track & Field camp: July 17th-20th. Details can be found here.
I am sure there are others throughout the state, but GVSU is the closest one I know of.
For those looking to get better at Pole Vault, see the link below about the Grand Haven Beach vault offered throughout the summer and the 2-day camp offered by East Kentwood in July.
