Congrats to Lauren!
I didn't realize it at the time of my conference results summary, but Lauren Travis broke the sophomore record with her fantastic throw of 109'1" in the disc during the conference meet.

On Friday night, the varsity girls ran in the OK Red Conference Meet at Hudsonville High School. Our conference is one of the toughest around and going into the meet we were in 4th place based off the dual meet schedule. Official results can be found here.
The top 8 in individual events scored for the team and all relays scored (only 6 teams, all 6 teams score). The top 6 earned medals in all events, including relays. We had a mixture of performances, some of the highlights and medalists include: In the long jump, Taylor Buis was 3rd, jumping 16'5" and Anna Repesh placed 6th with a new PR of 15'8.25" In the high jump, Taylor Buis was 4th clearing 5'0". In the discus, Lauren Travis had a GREAT day, placing 2nd overall with a new PR toss of 109'1". The 3200m Relay of Jenna Maas, Taylor Schott, Emma DeNave, and Abbey VanAllsburg placed 3rd overall with a time of 9:49.2. The 4X200 relay of Taylor Buis, Morgan Miller, Anna Repesh, and Faith White was 3rd overall with a new season best time of 1:49.24. Iris Swarthout was 5th in the mile running 5:18.3. The 4X100 relay of Taylor Buis, Silvia Restucci, Jurrien Wilson, and Morgan Miller was 4th overall with a season best time of 52.94. Morgan Miller finally got another chance to run the 300 hurdles (she has not been able to run them since spraining her ankle at Rockford), but finished 5th overall with a time of 50.00. In the 2 mile, Emma DeNave was 4th and Iris Swarthout finished 5th. We finished 5th in this meet with 61pts. This is 22 more points than we scored last year in this meet. However, we had the potential to do much better. So our overall finish in the conference this season was a tie for 4th place with Grand Haven. We are looking ahead to regionals this coming Friday at Grand Haven HS. This is the meet where the girls could potentially qualify for the state by finishing in the top 2 in their event OR meeting the additional qualifying standard for their event. We have the potential to have several girls make it to the state meet, but this all depends on who shows up to compete on that day. The JV Conference meet was a non-scoring meet, so we did not receive an overall team score. However, it was a great opportunity for the JV girls to compete one more time. Official results are available here. The top 3 in each event earned medals. The WO girls represented the team well- there were several PRs established and several who earned medals.
Medalists were: The 4X800 relay team of Maddie Kobylski, Sonya Collins, Alyssa Misiak, and Katherine Hoekstra placed 2nd overall running a time of 11:03.2. Natalie Dunn had a strong finish and come from behind effort to win the 400. She ran a new PR of 1:06.33. Maddie Kobylski ran tough in the 800 placing 2nd with a season best time of 2:34.97. Jaylee Rithamel had a strong last lap to take first in the 2 mile run with a new PR time of 12:56.7. In the field events, Katie Repesh was 2nd overall in the pole vault, clearing 7'0". Bella Correa placed 3rd in the discus, throwing a PR distance of 93'.5"; which also earned her a varsity letter by surpassing 93'. Sophie Coppersmith just missed medaling in long jump, she was 4th, but jumped a major PR and earned her varsity letter by jumping 15'.25". Natalie Dunn also PR'd in the high jump, clearing 4'6" and tied for 3rd overall. Others who established new PRs were: Sarah Olney cleared a bar for the first time in pole vault. Victoria Roubos threw 66'2" in the discus- 7ft further than her previous PR. Naomie Bailey and Jazmyn Patterson both threw PRs in shot put. Jayda Hoang finally broke 7 mins in the mile, running 6:57.9. Jayda Hoang & Maya Lee ran PRs in the 800. Katherine Hoekstra, Alyssa Misiak, and Mady Kobylski ran season best times in the 800. Kaylee Comai, Sydney Bolt, and Sarah Olney all ran PRs in the 400. Lizzie Equiluz and Noelani Crame ran PRs in the 200. Lastly, the highlight of the meet to me was Sydney Bolt's effort in the 4X400. I wish I could bottle up that effort and share it with the rest of the team. It was the exact effort and determination that we talked about at the beginning of Monday's practice. It was a great finish to the season for our JV athletes. Nice job ladies! The varsity girls competed in a new meet this year, the GR Elite Challenge at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids.
You can find the results here. As a team, we tied for 2nd overall with Zeeland West. Grand Haven won the meet. There were a few factors affecting who could compete: injuries and prom to name a few, however, those who were able to go had the opportunity to compete against some new competition. I was not overly concerned about the team score, but was mainly looking to see who would show up and compete well in this venue. Some had good days. Some struggled. We will process this meet on Monday and look ahead to our last OK Red conference dual meet against Grandville on Tuesday. The top 3 in each relay and elite event earned medals, the top 8 scored for the team. The following earned medals in the meet: Emma DeNave was 3rd in the mile- running 5:22.76- a PR. Anna Repesh was 2nd in the 400- running 1:01.23. Abbey VanAllsburg was 3rd in the 800- running 2:25.77- a PR. The 4X100 team of Taylor Buis, Jurrien Wilson, Silvia Restucci, and Anna Repesh was 2nd overall- running 53.79. The 4X800 team of Jenna Maas, Taylor Schott, Iris Swarthout, and Abbey VanAllsburg was 2nd overall- running 10:07.95. Taylor Buis was 3rd overall in the high jump- jumping 4'8". Taylor Buis was 3rd overall in the long jump- jumping 15'9". Heaven Brown was 3rd overall in the shot put- throwing 31'8". Yesterday we traveled to Rockford for our dual meet. We lost 103.5-33.5. Official results can be found here. If one were to only look at the overall team score, it would look like a bad loss. However, when looking closer at the results and the overall effort, there were a lot of great things that happened.
Yes, there were a few key injuries that prevented a few of the athletes from fully competing...Morgan had a rough fall in the hurdles and she will be looking to bounce back quickly. However, as a team- we had 42 PRs established in the meet last night. WOW! That is 15 more than our meet against Hudsonville. This is huge for us as we continue to rise up together as a team. Two event groups in particular had great days- the throwers and mid- and long distance groups. All but one thrower had a PR in the discus and several had prs in the shot put. The distance group had a big day in the 3200 relay- dropping 9 sec off their time. Several 800 and 1600 runners had significant prs. Another record was broken last night: Iris Swarthout broke the freshmen mile record of 5:17.84 set in 1981 by Kris Bale, by running a 5:16.41. WOW! It doesn't get any closer than this...we lost the dual meet against Hudsonville, 69-68. We ran a tough meet, but came up just short of pulling off the win. You can check out the official results here.
I am proud of the overall team effort. We showed up to compete and really pushed the Hudsonville squad. We knew going in that it would be a close meet. These are fun meets to be a part of. 27 prs were established tonight along with several other solid performances, but I want to highlight a few here: Iris Swarthout ran prs in the mile (5:22.3) and 2 mile (11:46.14) and Emma DeNave ran a pr in the mile (5:23) and a season best in the 2 mile tonight. Both ladies worked together and made solid attempts to beat Hudsonville's Melanie Holder. The 4X200 relay (Taylor Buis, Anna Repesh, Morgan Miller, and Faith White) had a key win to keep the meet close and ran a season best of 1:50.97. Morgan Miller dropped 2.5 sec in the 300 Hurdles for the win and ran a PR in 200. Taylor Buis had an incredible day- Tied for 1st place in the high jump, was part of the winning 4X200 relay, placed 2nd in the 200 (so close to winning) and pulled off the winning long jump distance 16'9" on her last attempt. Great job overall. Off to Rockford next! This is another week where we have 2 meets during the week. We will face Hudsonville and Rockford- both OK Red opponents. Both of these teams will be tough and will hopefully bring out another level of competition from the girls.
Monday- Normal Practice 3:10-5:15 Tuesday- Meet @ Hudsonville HS- Starts at 4:30pm Wednesday- Normal Practice 3:10-5:15pm Thursday- Meet @ Rockford HS- Starts at 4:30pm Friday- Normal Practice 3:10-5:15pm. Tonight was a great win for the girls in our first OK red dual meet. We won 96-41 against Grand Haven, a team that we have not won against in recent memory. The full results can be found here.
Overall, many of the girls, across event groups, had PRs. The warmer weather definitely helps the sprinters attain faster times and everyone should expect to continue to see improvements as they work hard in practice and compete well in the meets. A few performances that stuck out tonight: Seniors, Taylor Buis and Aurora Wernette both ran prs in the 100. Junior, Anna Smyk dropped 2 seconds off her 400 time to run a 1:04.04. Freshman, Elizabeth Snider continues to improve each meet, tonight she ran prs in the 100, 200, and 400. Freshman, Iris Swarthout ran a PR in the mile, dropping 6 seconds to a 5:25, and had a strong performance in the 2 mile. A senior who is doing track for the first time, Addy Gerig, continues to pr in long jump and the 300 hurdles and consistently scoring in the high jump. Freshman, Sonya Collins has consistently dropped her times each meet in the 800 and 1600. Junior, Kaylee Comai, threw 3 feet further than she has before establishing a new PR in shot put and she ran prs in the 200 and 400. Finally... Freshman, Faith White, had a standout performance winning the long jump 16'5.75" and breaking the freshmen record in the 400 by running 1:01.26. The previous record of 1:01.34 was set in 1988 by Tara Weymon. Nice job everyone! The sentinel did a write up on the Holland Meet with a focus on Taylor Buis. Check it out here
Tonight we had a meet against Holland. Its been awhile since we have actually been able to compete against them because it is often cancelled to cold/wet weather. We won 117-19. The official results can be found here.
A few highlights: Lauren Travis had an all time PR in the discus by over 21'...old PR was 76' and she threw 97'3" today!! Olivia Baur also threw a lifetime PR of 92'7". Abbey VanAllsburg had a lifetime PR in the 800, running 2:27.98. Many of the freshmen and those who are new to the sport had PRs as well. They are still continuing to try out new events and get a sense of where they can focus for the rest of the season. Thanks to all of those who could make it to the meet! The OK Red Conference Dual meets start up on Thursday against Grand Haven. Hope to see you there! |
